Before we left, we were met at the dock by the Commodore of the American
Legion Yacht Club and exchanged burgees between the clubs.
Sailed, then motor-sailed from Newport Beach Marina to Dana Point Marina, a nominal distance of only about 14 nautical miles (nm). Because we decided to sail as much as we could and the wind was from the south, our actual route was a bit longer, about 20 nm. We left in the rain and the transit was a bit rough as we had 3-5 foot swells with fairly short period and were sailing as close on the wind as Seasilk would allow. Our timing being always the best, we arrived at Dana Point in time to follow the harbor patrol at 3 knots while they towed another sailboat that was towing its sailing dingy to the anchorage area very near our dock. We are currently docked at the Dana Point Yacht Club's 90 foot guest dock. The club is very nice, with a fulltime staff and they welcomed us and our guests. Sue had invited several of her Healthcare Businesswoman Association (HBA) colleagues to join us for wine and cheese on the boat. Lisa, Heather and Laura provided a delightful evening of conversation on topics ranging from their planning for a national meeting in San Francisco to what things we all did as kids that we had to wait for the "statute of limitations" to expire on before we could tell our parents. Tonight was "Taco Tuesday" at the YC, so Sue and I went up later in the evening and enjoyed a margarita, burritos and tostados. While we were there, we check the burgees for our club's flag. It was there and judging from the age of the flag, was donated by a cruiser some time ago. |

It is raining today, so the planned bike ride has been postponed. We awoke this morning to the Southern California pleasure of a cabin that was warm enough that we needed to turn on the fans...yea! After lunch the weather improved. so we went for a long bike ride. First to the local Marine Ocean Center (unfortunately closed during the week), and then down the coast via the bike path to San Clemente. This is an easy ride down the coast with great ocean views, but it has a very boring mid-portion that one block back from the beach along a path carved out of the road by New Jersey barriers...called "K" barriers in California. Good thing we are near the end of the trip. The gas regulator valve to the oven and to the gas grill broke, so we are down to using the microwave exclusively until Craig can find a part...probably after the trip. |
