Fishing the pier

Sunset on an off-shore oil rig

Oct 11

Motor-sailed from Marina Del Rey to Newport Beach Marina, about 54 nm.

This was potentially the second most hazardous part of the trip only because Long Beach is one of the busiest harbors in the world and we had to cross both her main shipping lanes.  Probably because it was Sunday, we were pleasantly surprised with no significant traffic.  that was until we got to Newport.  Newport on a Sunday (even off-season) was a zoo.  Boats crossing your path, people-ferries almost colliding with three-car-ferry and to make it more interesting Duffy electric boats and kayaks everywhere.  [Newport is the home of the Duffy Electric Boat Company and boasts 1500 of the 3000 boats sold worldwide.]

We checked in at the guest dock of the American Legion Yacht Club after some confusion getting them to move a (what else?) Duffy that was parked in our spot.

Craig off-loaded the bikes and he and Sue went for a ride down the beach to watch the sunset from the end of the pier.  We also got to witness people fishing for sardines (no, they don't come in a can) and catching them on a single line 5 and 6 at a time, over and over again, as fast as they could clear the hooks and cast back again.  Took two people to keep up with cleaning the fish that one man could catch!

Dinner was steak and baked potatoes on the boat.

Sue finds "Grannies" house

Sue is much more relaxed when she isn't driving the sailboat that is crossing!

Columbus Day

We are still docked at the American Legion YC.  This is a combination club.  The main club house and bar is really an American Legion Post with a post commander.  The building next door is the Yacht Club meeting room with a presiding commodore; we got to meet both.

Sue and Craig went for a long bike ride that included crossing to Balboa Island on the car ferry and lunch at a local cafe.  Balboa Island is really just that, an island.  It is serviced on the west by a 3-car, car ferry and on the east by a bridge.  There is even another smaller private island at the north end of Balboa Isl. that has a small bridge to a gated entrance.
