Motored from Channel Islands Marina (Oxnard) to Marina Del Rey, about 50 nm.
Dolphins love to play with Seasilk. There's a game afoot, we just don't understand the rules; something about who can come the closest without touching and if you cross the bow as you swim by you get extra points. You must get even more points if you do the pass inverted. Sue and I just watched a pod playing and one individual must have misjudged and touched the boat because he/she flipped away from the bow at a strange angle and the other 10-12 players stopped the game and moved on behind us. I can just hear some dolphin mother saying..."I told you kids that if you kept up that game somebody was going to get hurt." Truly, there be dolphins! We just watched a mega-pod of over 100 as we passed through their line of travel. You can spot them from a mile away because they make a line of splashes. This group acted the same way as the large pod Brian and Craig saw on the crossing from the Channel Islands to Santa Barbara. They were not to be distracted at all by Seasilk...just dived under and continued on their merry way; no games allowed? The third activity one sees dolphins do is "fishin". This is usually 5-10 individuals accompanied by scores of birds. For some reason, this is an activity from which they are easily distracted to start a game of tag with Seasilk. Craig was sad that he was not allowed to play until Sue pointed out that he was playing...he was the goal! Yea! We arrived at the guest dock at the Pacific Mariners YC, Marina Del Rey about 1500. We were docked right in front of the club. So close that people standing on the balcony could talk to us about our trip and our boat while enjoying their drink. This is a very nice, small club that offered a kitchen if we needed it, loaner DVD and VHS movies, a nice bar and couch area with fireplace and a spacious library and loaner computer area. We joined Peter (the club Port Captain) and several of the other members for Friday night pizza and ballgame.

Sue and I biked down the beach for about 10 miles from Venice Beach to the
north end of Santa Monica Beach. Sue thought the "freak
show" on Venice Beach had calmed down quite a bit since her last visit,
but it could just be that we are here off season. The three day Arthritis Foundation Ride from San Francisco to Venice Beach was just ending and Sue talked to a lady whose husband worked for Amgen and who knew one of the people Sue works with at Genentech...Pharma is a small world. Sue and I also visited the neighborhoods along the Venice Beach canals. These canals were built to promote a housing development and gave Venice its name. |
